The Weekly Joe – Push the Movement

In recent years we are witnessing a new kind of blogging called “curators”.
These guys know that no one can ever handle seeing all the cool things this world has to offer so they work for us to gather them into one place, usually with a dominant theme, for us to enjoy.

Tumblr has really helped to take it to the next level so in the coming weeks I’ll introduce you to some of my favorite curator’s blogs.

Push the Movement is definitely one of my favorites. Sometimes I just turn off my brain and let the images run in front of me. The Regular Joe loves to be woken up by some kind of stimulation. most of the time i'm just semi-sleeping (until it's time to go to sleep)

What is unique about Push the Movement are the sentences he posts here and there. I already spoke of my love for words and there are not many things that moves me like a well written sentence which says more than a 100 pages ever could.

If you want to see my attempts to write a good short sentence, check it out here.

Have a great week

The weekly Joe – The Regular Joe (me!!!)

To celebrate my one year birthday, this week’s “weekly Joe” is dedicated to (drum roll please)… me.

I am in no way implying that the Regular Joe was born a year ago. I track the birth of R.J. to the first time a man woke up on Monday morning to go to work or found things don’t go the way he wanted or that he paid too much on something stupid he will never use.

The main assumption I had in mind while writing the first few words of this blog was:

a. I am not special.
b. I have some things bothering me and I want to say stuff about them.
c. If I am not special and things bother me, there must be some other people out there dealing with the same issues.
d. I am not good looking enough to make it only by my looks.

It’s a great triumph for the R.J. to start something and not quit after a week or two. To hold a commitment for a year without even noticing it is not an everyday thing for me and I learned a lot about myself during that year. If only I could implement the same vigor to other aspects of my life I could have had a Nobel prize, an Oscar, a Tony and best “on screen kiss” award.
Via Flipboard

I had a hard time promoting myself through blog directories or any site who asks you to categorize and sub-categorize yourself. How can a man categorize his thoughts? Sports? Design? World news? Relationships???

So to round up all the ways you can follow and interacted with the Regular Joe: My Twitter (@theregjoe), FB page (also looks great of Flipboard), Google+, Digg, RSS or just check in here once in a while. Yes I know, I’m all over the place.

So back to business, the Regular Joe basically has no one subject or purpose. It is only a guy who writes ok, not a professional blogger or professional anything for that matter and just publish, and do whatever comes to mind. It’s fun.

Have a great week and may we have a great year.

Thank you for reading, thank you for commenting and thank you for communicating.

To the Regular Joe is the world!

The Weekly Joe - Unhappy Hipsters

The past few years the regular Joe found himself surrounded by hipsters. If you don't know what a hipster is, I'm trying to keep it short and it will take a while to explain, so Bing it (Microsoft is paying me).

I’m a bit too big physically to fit in with the skinny hipster crowd so I never tried. Also I could never pull off suspenders.

The good thing the non-hipsters got from the hipsters community is the new realm of humor we like to call 'making fun of hipsters'.

Unhappy Hipsters is a great tumbler who takes everyday situations and attach a really funny hipster like narration.

The weekly Joe – The Brokers with Hands on Their Faces Blog

I had the this week’s Weekly Joe ready for days now but at the last minute I decided to change it so you won’t think the Regular Joe is oblivious to current events

It is no secret the world economy has gone a bit coocoo these past few months and no one really know what’s going on.

It seems every time we fix something or get good news it only leads to a hundred more problems.

I love reading all those analysts saying what should be done or who’s to blame and then go on to say the complete opposite on the next day.  Trusting an analyst is much like trusting the weatherman, it’s all good and well but take an umbrella anyways.

Many people blame wall streeters and bankers for the current situation but we should realize that the economy is made out of us, the people buying and selling stuff and what we are willing to do or give up. In a thousand years when they’ll teach about the economic meltdown of 2018, they will try to understand how people in such bad shape kept living like there is no tomorrow and care mostly about who wore who on the red carpet.

Seeing our “financial supervisors” look with grim face to the red screens has become a more than common sight so when my friend (@stefman) introduced me to this Brokers with Hands on Their Faces Blog I just thought it was the right thing in the right time.  It gives a more human angle to the headlines and my heart goes out to these people who see everything fall in real-time.

Have a green screens week

The weekly Joe – Things Organized Neatly

The regular Joe is a neat person or so I try to be. Most of the fights I have with Miss Joe are about order and things laying around the house.

I still remember my grandfather walking around the house at 4am, straightening the carpets. since then I admire the pursue to neatness in a man

My motto is “an organized desk makes an organized thought” and I never fail to mention it to those who build folder towers in their work place.

The weekly Joe – the Sartorialist

I wish I could dress better. Dressing in a more unique and cool way was always one of my greatest desires.  But I never did. I have a pretty solid dress code and it stays the same as years go by.

The truth of the matter is I just can’t pull it off.  I’m tall, wide and the last thing you can say about me is that I have a gentle physic.

I make up for it by being a cool dude all around and try to surround myself with stylish people.

The Sartorialist executes brilliantly the simplest idea we all thought about at least once. It goes around NYC, Milan and Paris to find the best dressed and stylish people on the street. It’s very refreshing seeing real people and not some models posing on a cardboard coconut tree.

It posts regularly and it’s a really nice moment of the day seeing a cool person act in a cool way. Makes you think about your next party attire.

So you there with the vintage sandals, say cheese!

Have a stylish week all

The Weekly Joe – Up on a hill

Usually when I recommend a website or blog I try to give a bit of background about it or its writers. This week I failed you on this department but I promise the blog will make up for it for a picture worth a thousand words.

Up on a hill is one of the most beautiful sites I have ever encountered. It was created by Laura (@lauracope) and Joe (@joehewitt) and basically it’s a photographed dairy of their travels.

It is hard to describe so just check it out.

Have a great week

The weekly Joe – Yanko Design

I keep saying that although I am the regular Joe it doesn’t mean I sit around all day, drink beer and scratch my belly. It is in the high most importance for me to sit on a well designed, yet comfortable couch, drinking my beer out of a good looking bottle and feel up my abs (still working on that last one).

You might have noticed I’m a sucker for stuff designed to make my life easier and better.

Yanko Design is no doubt one of the leading design blogs out there. It sets the stage for the most radical ideas which effects even the smallest aspects of our lives.

It covers everything from cars, kitchenware, solutions for the disabled and clever architecture.
If you are a minimalist and wish to follow one design blog, that’s the one.

Have a designed week

The weekly Joe – WebUrbanist

The regular Joe spent his whole life living at one of this world’s greatest cities. I love the urban life and I breathe them lunge full.

A city is like a living organism. It has character, it needs to feed, breath.
It learns, sometime the hard way.
And like every living thing it likes to look great, decorate, stay healthy and go crazy.

WebUrbanist celebrates just that, all the great things the urban playground has to offer. It covers the coolest architecture, art, graffiti and more. For you treehugers try WebEcoist who covers the blessed sustainable urban living.

The weekly Joe – Similar Sites

Similar Sites is not a cool design blog or a funny web site but it is one of the most useful tools out there.

Its purpose is to help us find search results based on content match instead of popularity.

I use it basically to find stuff similar to the stuff I like. It makes it really easy.

For example; if I love The Selby and want to find more content of the kind, I just enter The Selby’s URL and receive a list of web sites I should probably check out.

I guess I should have mentioned it before I started the “weekly Joe” bit but it’s better later than never.

Try it

The weekly Joe – Business Insider

If your name is Warren Buffet or Donald Trump this post is not for you. Actually Donald, you should read this.

The world is a mess for the past few years (for the past 8,000 years to be exact). Since the 2008 crisis I can never be sure if we are doing good or bad. The unemployment is up but the GOP is rising, the stocks are crashing but energy ETFs are on the rise, everybody say this is the year for commodities and everybody say it’s the year it will crash.

So no one really knows what is going on or what will happen. Big surprise.

What I love about Business Insider is that it processes all this information into readable, easy going articles. It’s maybe not the top business blog out there but it is definitely ranks in the top 10 on my list.

Its uniqueness lays on its simple language, its wide range coverage, the balance between quick updates and in-depth analysis and the great articles they aggregate from top tech, finance and politics writers.

Amid all the heavy and serious topics you can always count on posts like “Tech flops of 2011” or “America wildest party hotels”. Useful stuff.

So, if you feel like coming prepared to your next dinner party just read “10 things you need to know this morning” but if you want to make your investment manager know you are not just an ignorant patsy (although you are probably are) you may catch up on the Greece crisis or the Chinese rise and fall.

So get to business!!!

The weekly Joe – Lovely package

I have a big issue with packages. Everything I buy seems to be packed very extensively.

A box, inside a smaller box, inside some things wrapped separately in small nylon bags (who makes these??).

Even if I buy an apple in the market it comes in a small box now.

If I had something to do with it you would get your new MacBook wrapped with yesterday paper.

Lovely package is basically a show case for packages done by students and artists. It’s refreshing and shows us good things do come in small packages, Literally.

Have a great week

The Weekly Joe – The Awesomer

I previously presented myself as an up-beat slang authority. Off course slang is evolving everyday and as hard as I try to keep up with it, I find myself struck and dazzled each time I spend 5 minutes with my younger brother and his friends. I can understand their language but their intentions escape me.

Up until 2 years ago I have never used the word ‘awesome’. I'm not an American but I quickly learned ‘awesome’ comprises about 25% of the American language (the rest 75% is ‘Omygod’).

For you non-Americans, ‘awesome’ basically means: cool, great, lovely, yes, off-course, I love you, I can’t believe what I’m seeing and everything else we consider to be good.

The Awesomer is a website dedicated exactly for those things. There is no one guideline and the only thing in common with all the posts is that they are all… well, awesome.
It posts daily and sourced from all over the web to bring the coolest stuff out there.

Enjoy and have an excellent week

The weekly Joe – The Selby

So how was your week? Boring? Regular? Same old routine?

One of my favorite past time is walking around looking into apartments just to see how other people live. I can watch a stranger sitting in his living room for an hour.

But just like in any safari trip, the real jackpot is feeding time. It’s comforting to see other people eat dinner in front of the TV also.

Because of this nasty habit I always make sure that if someone looks into my place he will at least be a bit amused.

The Selby was started by a portrait, interiors, and fashion photographer called Todd Selby. It offers a cool view into creative and interesting people’s personal spaces.

In my opinion it is the most visually beautiful site I’ve seen. He doesn’t post very frequently but it’s worth the wait.

The weekly Joe – Style by Kling & Dilbert

This week there’re two cool websites I want to present, simply because each week they produce really cool stuff and it will be a shame if you miss it just because I’m a “post one at a time” hard ass.

STYLE by KLING

Even I know that when it comes to style we have much to learn from the Scandinavian people. I guess peace and quiet really allows you to develop other stuff other than smaller smart bombs.

Elin Kling is a household name in Sweden when it comes to style and fashion. She writes about it for years through her blog STYLE by KLING, her fashion magazine STYLEBY and Swedish TV networks.

Girls maybe knows her by her collaboration with H&M where she is launching her own collection for spring 2011.

For me it is mostly to maintain my crush for her. She acts as a model to a fabulous life and each new post is a “feel good” moment.

The weekly Joe – Vice magazine

This is going to be a short one for I just got back from a 2 weeks vacation and I still need to unpack.
Before I get my life back in orbit I wanted to take care of your weekend’s reading.

A few months ago a friend told me about Vice magazine and I can’t miss an article since. It is really fresh and most definitely one of the coolest things around.

It’s a bit hard to categorize but it is filled with articles about alternative culture you won’t find anywhere else.
It is not for everyone but once you are hooked everything else just seems stupid and mundane.

Have a great weekend

The weekly Joe - Design Milk

Regular ≠ Average

Sometimes the Regular Joe is being confused with the average Joe.  I totally disagree with that statement. I never thought of myself to be average and I don’t think anyone who might be reading this is.

If you have a computer and 4 walls around you, you are defiantly not average and are better off than most people on Earth.

We all have our interests and cultural world regardless of our education or economics state.

I know nothing about psychology but I don’t let it bother me while spending most of my time criticizing other people’s behavior or I can’t draw a straight line but I still can appreciate architecture or design.

I don’t consider myself a heavy internet user but I do like finding out new, cool stuff without it taking too much of my time. So I did manage to become efficient in reading and finding the content I like the most.

IM my PIN #

I guess what really bugs me is sitting with my younger brother who is now 22 years old and find out that for him internet = Facebook + whatever his friends sends him to his Blackberry.  There is so much out there and it’s a shame not to check it out at least.

By the way, I’m pretty sure my brother won’t read this also so please IM it to his PIN number or whatever it’s called.

So each week I’ll send out “The weekly Joe” where I’ll share some cool website, blogs and tools on the web.  From one amateur to another.

If you are not a reader of this blog but still wish to enjoy “The weekly Joe” please write me at theregjoe@gmail.com and you will be mailed once a week.

Your RSS reader

When I am invited to a dinner, many times I consider the table setting as important as the food itself.  It should be inviting, easy to use and accommodating to the event.

The same with information, the medium of presentation is just as important as the content itself. If you wish to keep up with multiple website on a regular basis, you should first find a good RSS reader.

This is not a tech blog so I won’t get into the whole “what is RSS” discussion. I’ll just say that I use the “Google Reader” which is awesome and easy to use. Anybody with a Google account can use it. If not, there are many RSS readers out there so just find the one you fancy.

Each time you encounter a website or a blog you like to keep up with, just add it to your RSS reader and you are set. You may start by adding the regular Joe RSS feed.

Design Milk

I like to introduce Design Milk. It’s a great online design magazine covering modern design. It talks of art, architecture, interior design and more.  It is easy to use, get updated frequently and has a killer look on the iPad’s Flipboard app.

Expect a slight depression at first when realized it is impossible to have everything on the site, but after a while you grow up and find comfort by looking at the pretty pictures.

Enjoy and have a beautiful weekend.
